IMG_5869This posts covers 3 sessions this week.

My mid term plan is to work on my speed. This worked well with two session this week, 10 and 11 km long which both were ran at a 5 min/km speed. The second one included some 200 m of elevation up and down. So I was happy with this.

On Sunday I wanted to cover some 25 km at a 5:30 min/km pace. The first 12 km went very well. And then it happened…

I ran along a promenade where I ran at least 200 times already. I know the pavement, the route, everything. It’s a beautiful scenic area with sea views and a grass field between the pavement and the ocean. Now, I was running and I looked at the park benches which are there since ever. I thought “well, running into one of those would be really painful”.

You won’t believe it… I really don’t make this up!

About 15 m later I was fascinated by a video crew on the grass field. And it was not a stunning model or so that grabbed my attention (because there was no beauty on the scene). It was the camera and the technical equipment I looked at.

And while I was looking…

Smash

Pain

It is soooooo stupid. But I really crashed into this park bench. With about 5:30 min/km. Full stop. The left leg must have been the first contact, because that one hurt more than the other.

As I was lying with my upper body on the benche I could not decide if I should laugh or cry. I opted for laugh. Then I tried to start running, which was not possible.

So I walked a few meters to another bench and sat down for some 10 minutes. I experienced a little shock and my circulation was struggling for a moment. After that I knew: I have about 8 km to get back to the car, where my wife would be waiting 1h 10 min later for me.

And so I started the longest walk along the promenade I ever did…

The next days:

I could not run for 2 days, on day 3 I went to the gym for a 45 min easy spinning session which was absolutely fine. On Saturday, 6 days after the accident, I’ll go running again.

I can’t tell you how stupid it still feels. If I would have looked at a female runner, I would say “that was a deserved punishment”. But I did not 🙂

Anyway – funny things happen and as long as one can recover it’s all fine.

By the way: I completed exactly 1,500 km this year so far.

This weeks sessions:

  • 10 km / 6.2 mi; 51 min
  • 11.1 km / 6.9 mi; 57 min (200 m elevation)
  • 19.3 km / 12.0 mi; 2h 17 min (the park bench crash run)
Monthly distance (July) 113.6 km / 70.6 mi
Annual distance 1,500.0 km / 932.0 mi
