Me at my first Two Oceans 2009

I’m happy again!

Only 41 days left to the start of the next Two Oceans Ultra Marathon. Time to get serious – even if my main goal is a Sub 9 Comrades on June 1st.

Anyway, from now on the long runs will be run more aggressive to work on my pace. Today I opted for a very nice 6k / 4k intervall session.

It reads like this:

  • 6 km at 5:50 – 5:45 min/km
  • 4 km at 5:05 (this is close to my Two Oceans pace)
  • repeat for 4 times to accumulate another 40 km in total

It went really great. Once again, the last intervall was the fastest. I felt strong all the time and there is one very interesting mental element in this kind of training:

I am so focused on the current pace and distance, that I do not recognize the total distance covered. The “lap”-function/display on my Polar watch helped me a lot.

The display shows me:

  • Lap distance
  • Pace
  • Lap time

Therefore I never see how far I went already and for how long I already ran. Of course I knew it, but I did not see it on the display. Therefore I am not forced to think “wow, you went so far already, you might become tired soon”.

The toughest part of the session today was avoiding not being killed by cyclists. Tomorrow is the day of the “Cape Argus Cycletour” with 35,000 cyclists. And many of them riding around do not pay attention to other people on the road. So I used a route where I had as little as possible to do with cyclists.

For my friends cycling tomorrow: Have fun! Due to bussines arrangements my wife and I will not participate this year.

Distance 40.1 km / 24.9 mi
Time 3 h 41 min
Monthly distance (March) 132.2 km / 82.1 mi
Annual distance 747.7 km / 464.6 mi
